Port Edgar Marina
Working with operators Port Edgar Holdings, GLM has been appointed to redevelop iconic Port Edgar Marina into an exciting sailing destination along the Firth of Forth. GLM will design and deliver The Hub – a new facility hosting a restaurant, visitor’s centre and the marina’s yacht club – and redevelop the existing buildings at Port Edgar into an improved retail offering. The project is part of a significant investment into the site to diversify the business on site and secure the long term viability of the marina for watersports enthusiasts and the general public alike.
The design of the development is very much driven by the site and by research into harbour front pavilions worldwide such as the new Fish Market building in Bergen. The main element is a curved block with monopitched roof and floor to ceiling glazing to give panoramic views from the restaurant and yacht club across the Forth and the gallery of bridges old and new. An elegant exposed steel structure echoes the engineering of the bridges and the First World War naval sheds directly behind it. This block is balanced with simple shed forms which service it and enclose a south facing entrance courtyard. Lying between the Forth Road Bridge and the new Queensferry Crossing, Port Edgar has berths for around 300 boats and is home to a yacht club, a rowing club, a water sports centre and several cruise boat operators. The development is estimated for completion in late 2016.
