Brief and Response

This A Listed castle in East Lothian was tackled in two phases. Phase 1, managed by our building surveyors, consisted of the careful conservation of the external envelope. For Phase 2 we worked with the client’s inspired US based architect and interior designers, providing technical architectural support for the comprehensive refurbishment of the internal fabric, replacement of building

services and fitting out as a private residence. GLM also undertook the role of Construction Manager eliminating the Main (or General) Contractor and enabling the appointment of the very best package contractors for each element of the works. As well as the full restoration of the Tower GLM has taken the lead in the refurbishment of the estate cottages and a remarkable and now restored

but previously decrepit 19th-century glasshouse. Nunraw Tower dates back to the 16th century when it was occupied by an order of nuns. It has passed through many owners since then and in 1946, the estate was acquired by the Cistercian brothers of Mount St Joseph Abbey. They used the tower as a guesthouse until it was sold to the current owner in 2014.
