Custom House, Bowling

As part of the Bowling Harbour (West Dunbartonshire) regeneration programme, GLM were appointed via Michael Laird Architects to provide conservation expertise input first and then for the full design and lead consultancy services for the conversion of the Category B Listed Customs House (1790) into holiday accommodation.

Once an initial scheme based on the client’s brief was agreed, GLM architects and conservation specialist surveyors worked together to decide the conservation strategy, as well as to obtain the respective consent approvals (Change of Use, Listed Building Consent and Building Warrant). Given the peculiarities of the building, several challenges were present during both the design and planning, which the expert hands of the GLM team carefully and effectively managed.

The internal works consisted of a series of minor alterations to convert the existing layout into seven ensuite bedrooms and a communal chill out/ breakfast room. Much of the original internal fabric was removed in the past and replaced with modern finishes, but such original elements as do remain will be preserved. The proposed external repair works accord with the Historic Environment Scotland policies and will help to secure the future of the building while respecting its architectural and historical significance. This project is partially funded by their Historic Buildings Repair Grant Scheme, and GLM provided assistance and technical input during the application process to successfully apply for it.
