Nunraw Tower
Our Mission
GLM provided a full service to conserve and restore Nunraw Tower, an A Listed East Lothian Castle.

Nunraw Tower dates back to the 16th century when it was occupied by an order of nuns. It has passed through many owners since then, and in 1946, the estate was acquired by the Cistercian brothers of Mount St Joseph Abbey. They used the tower as a guesthouse until it was sold to the current owner in 2014.
Upon purchasing Nunraw Tower, the owner embarked on the complete restoration of the A-listed castle. GLM undertook a thorough condition survey of the property, and the first and most pressing phase was to completely overhaul the external fabric, including a complete reslating exercise, overhauling of windows and stonework repairs. This was managed and overseen by GLM’s building surveyors.
For Phase Two, we worked with the client’s inspired US-based architect and interior designers, providing technical architectural support for the comprehensive refurbishment of the internal fabric, the replacement of building services, and the fitting out as a private residence.
Our approach to conservation projects is generally pragmatic, using a mix of modern and traditional materials and techniques, with a focus on the building’s long-term, sustainable future.

GLM also undertook the role of Construction Manager, eliminating the Main (or General) Contractor and enabling the appointment of the very best package contractors for each element of the works.
As well as the full restoration of the Tower, GLM has taken the lead in the refurbishment of the estate cottages and a remarkable and now restored but previously decrepit 19th-century glasshouse.
