Brief and Response

We have been involved with Christ Church at Morningside since 1985 assisting them with various projects. The administration came to us looking to increase the amount of multi purpose function space for the church which at the time consisted of a basement below the church and a timber Scout hut in the gardens. Our solution was a new build centre in the grounds, finished in stone and with a feature glazed screen to the main space. By use of highly insulated sliding partitions the main space is able to be sub-divided into separate meeting rooms.

Additional accommodation included an office / reception, kitchen an toilets. When it came time for internal alterations to the main sanctuary, the brief for this project was 2- fold. To introduce an internal draught lobby to the main sanctuary and create a defined welcoming area. Given the decorative nature of the church, the solution to this had to be well thought through, subtle and with a light touch. The scheme was built around a redundant but highly attractive chancel screen which we installed at the back of the church,

removing some pews in the process. This provided the subtle demarcation between welcome area and main seating. The chancel screen was not long enough to cover the full width of the church so a contemporary and complimentary screen was installed each side of the existing. The project was carried out by highly skilled shopfitters in limited disruptive time and to a high level of finish.
