John O’Groats Triumphs at 2014 RIAS Awards

GLM picked up two awards and a coveted short listing for our work on the Inn at John O’Groats for Natural Retreats at the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards on 18 June. The RIAS announced 12 other winners that represent the very best in Scottish architecture.

RIAS Awards Judge, George Oldham (RIAS RIBA), presented GLM with the Tourism & Visitor Facilities Award and provided a bit of background on the project. “This symbolic, much visited, location was, for too long, down at heel. Now, brightly coloured pavilions extend the restored Victorian hotel to create a whole new attraction and a highly visible landmark.”

GLM was also awarded the Wood for Good/Forestry Commission Scotland Award – a special category award recognizing the best use of timber amongst the short listed projects.

Craig White, Chair of Wood for Good, had this to say about GLM’s inspired use of wood: “The Wood for Good award winning project is an exemplar of how wood can be used from whole building structural solutions, prefabrication, cladding to elegant finishes. The use of local skills, labour and materials is testament to how a wood first approach is sustainable, innovative and supports local economies. The developer, designer, contractor and operator are all to be congratulated.”
