We are pleased to announce that Ian McKee, GLM’s Managing Director, has been formally appointed Senior Vice Chairman of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in Scotland. Ian, who is a Fellow of RICS and a member of the RICS Scotland Board, accepted the post after serving 15 years on the Building Surveying Professional Group Board of which he was its Chairman from 2009 to 2012. When Ian takes over from the current Chairman, Steven Tolson, next summer, he will be only the second Building Surveyor to lead the institution in Scotland.
Commenting on his appointment and outlined his objectives for the next couple of years, Ian said, “as our current Chairman said in his mission statement in July, twelve months as RICS Chairman provides little time for personal aspirations to be turned into practice and so Steven and I have agreed to work in coalition on a two year mission that promotes membership for young people and seeks ways to support those working in smaller organisations.”
RICS Scotland Director Sarah Speirs welcomed the appointment. “As a building surveyor straddling the worlds of commercial and residential property and construction, Ian has a unique and useful understanding of many important aspects of the profession.”
As one of the founders of GLM’s mixed practice of chartered building surveyors and architects, Ian’s solid technical and first class academic background is complemented by intensive building surveying experience and project management expertise. Having undertaken numerous commercial building refurbishment, conversion and repair projects, Ian has a deep understanding of the complex technical, economic and commercial issues involved in the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. Most recently he spearheaded GLM’s hotel, leisure and tourism team in the award winning £7.5m redevelopment of John O’ Groats, one of Scotland’s key tourism gateways.
He also provides important due diligence and pre-acquisition surveys for major commercial and institutional clients as well as private individuals and investors.
Ian is passionate about design, function and durability and firmly believes that the greenest building is the building you already have.
